How to Make a Tote Bag Out of a Rope by Weaving
Turn some old rope into a new fashion accessory. (Hemera Technologies/ Images)

Make a large and sturdy tote bag from rope for a rustic looking fashion accessory. Show off your bright personality with a tinted and coloured rope for a flamboyant tote or use a natural-coloured rope for an accessory that blends in with a more demure personality. The woven rope tote is easy to make, requires no previous experience with weaving and you can even use a simple piece of cardboard for your loom.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  1. 1

Place a large, thick piece of cardboard on your working surface. Measure out slits along one short end of the cardboard. Begin 2 inches away from the edge and make a mark every 1/2 inch until you reach 2 inches from the other edge. Make a 2-inch-long slit through each mark.

  2. 2

Cut 40-inch-long pieces of rope. Slide one piece of rope into each of the slits in your cardboard.

  3. 3

Pin one end of weaving rope to the first strip, just underneath the cardboard slits. Sew the two pieces of rope together to keep it in place.

  4. 4

Weave one long piece of rope through the 40-inch-long pieces. Weave over top the first strip of rope, under the second and over top of the next. Continue until you reach the end.

  5. 5

Begin weaving a second row from the other end. If you finished off the first row weaving under, weave over top of the first rope in the next row. Continue weaving back and forth across the strips until you reach the end. Sew the end of the weaving rope to the last 40-inch-long piece of rope.

  6. 6

Sew a few stitches through the ends of each 40-inch-long piece of rope into the adjoining weaving rope to keep the pieces together. Cut off the excess ends of the pieces of rope.

  7. 7

Fold the woven rope fabric in half. Sew the side seams together with a whip stitch. Sew two or three rows of stitches for strength. Flip the bag right side out.

  8. 8

Cut two pieces of rope, each about 36 inches long. Twist the two pieces of rope together. Sew the two pieces of rope together at each end to keep them together.

  9. 9

Pin one end to the inside of the right side of the tote and the other end to the left side of the tote. Sew the rope tote straps to the tote.
