The Singer Sew & Serge, or side cutter attachment, allows your sewing machine to act as an expensive serger. This presser foot attachment sews two pieces of fabric together while cutting off the excess material to create professional seams that require no hand-trimming. The excess material is cut first, and then the seam is sewn in an over-edge stitch to finish the seam so it will not ravel.

Instructions

  1. 1

Turn the screw on the left side of the needle away from you to loosen it. Pull the presser foot and needle down and off the shank.

  2. 2

Slide the Singer Sew & Serge foot onto the metal shank from behind the needle bar. Rotate the side cutter attachment so its arm surrounds the needle bar and the word "Singer" is on the right side of the needle bar facing you.

  3. 3

Turn the screw on the left side of the needle toward you to tighten the attachment onto the needle bar.

  4. 4

Slowly turn the hand wheel on the right side of the sewing machine toward you and observe the thread on the attachment. The thread will be picked up from the bobbin underneath and move over the stitch finger on the cutter. The stitch finger is in the same position as the left side of your presser foot.

  5. 5

Cut a notch out of the rear junction of the two pieces of fabric about 1 inch from the rear and 1 inch from the right side.

  6. 6

Slide the notched fabric pieces over the platform of the attachment closest to you and under the back platform. Push the fabric notch as far as it will go to the right inside the attachment.

  7. 7

Set the sewing machine stitch type to an over-edging or serging stitch.

  8. 8

Sew slowly along the seam allowing the attachment to work. Left the presser foot bar on the right when you get to the end of the seam and cut the thread. Pull the finished work out to the rear and left of the attachment.
