How to Make Sure the Disk Is Not Full or Write-Protected

Information storage on computers is often allowed through permissions designated by the operating system. While operating systems have always had administrator functions, the role of different users became more prevalent in Windows XP and successor operating systems. Users not logged-in as an administrator may find restrictions in the form of error messages such as "Make Sure the Disk Is Not Full or Write-Protected" when trying to save files. Inherent hard drive limitations also exist that may prompt such an error, but Windows has ways to allow users to check disk space and permission sets.

    Click on the "Start" icon found on the main menu bar. Select "Computer."

    Locate and right-click the local hard drive, which is usually designated as drive "C:." Select "Properties."

    Click on the "General" tab to find the amount of total hard drive space as well as the amount of free hard drive space available. Click "Disk Cleanup" to free up hard drive space if necessary.

    Click on the "Security" tab to find current user permission sets. Click on "Edit" to change permissions if necessary.
