If you are fighting a battle of the bulge and attempting to lose weight, the last thing you want is to obtain wrong information when you hit the scale, especially if the number is high. Digital scales are easy to read on some models, even providing your body-fat ratio. But how do you know if the figures are accurate? Begin by verifying that you are properly using the scale, then perform some tests to be sure the number displayed is precise.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Remove the scale from an uneven floor. Place on a carpet-free area or on thin carpeting only. Choose a hard floor, if you have one. Place a board beneath the scales if your floors are all carpet.

  2. 2

Stand still. Place your feet in the centre of the scale and balance evenly between both, refraining from shifting your weight side to side.

  3. 3

Calibrate your scale. Utilise the on-screen menu or check your product manual and locate the calibration button. Hold the button down until the scale enters the calibration mode, which will be indicated on your screen, along with a number. Take the calibration weight that matches the number displayed on the screen and place it on the scale to verify accuracy. The calibration weight should have been included with your digital scale at the time of purchase. If you do not have one, contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

  4. 4

Test with weights. Take a 10-pound barbell and place it on the scale to verify accuracy. You can also utilise a 1-gallon jug or other item for which you know the weight.

Tips and warnings

  • When using a known weight test, do not place your hand on the digital scale.
  • Always weigh at the same time each day, preferably in the morning before breakfast.
