If you are teaching children about African cultures and lifestyles, you can make the lesson more exciting and interactive by having the kids make an African-related craft. For example, kids can create an African hut using items that can be found around the house or purchased from an arts and crafts supply store. This allows the students to see a visual model of what an African hut looks like, instead of just reading about it.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue stick
- Peanut canister
- Paper cone cup, large
- Paper mache pulp
- Acrylic paint
Place a 12-inch square of cardboard onto a flat surface. You can use cardboard from an old box, or you can purchase a cardboard sheet from a craft store. This will be the base of the African hut.
Push a new hot glue stick into the back of a hot glue gun and heat the hot glue gun for five minutes.
Squeeze a line of hot glue around the opening of an empty peanut canister and press the opening onto the cardboard. Hold the canister in place for three minutes to allow the glue to cool and harden.
Squeeze a line of hot glue around the opening of a larger paper cone cup and press the opening onto the top of the peanut canister. Hold the cone in place for three minutes so that the glue can harden.
Combine one cup of paper mache pulp and one cup of hot water into a bowl and allow the pulp to sit for 10 minutes so that it thickens.
Cover the outside of the peanut canister with the paper mache pulp, creating a 1/2-inch thick layer. Allow the pulp to dry for two hours.
Cover the paper cone with tacky glue. Use scissors to cut pieces of raffia to measure five inches long. Press the raffia pieces onto the tacky glue. Allow the glue to dry for 20 minutes.
Paint the paper-mache-covered canister using tan or brown acrylic paint so that it will look more realistic, then allow the paint to dry for 20 minutes before displaying the African hut.
