The eTrex Venture HC is part of Garmin's line of geocaching-friendly GPS devices. The handheld GPS can hold up to 500 waypoints at one time and 10,000 points in its track log, making it ideal for geocaching enthusiasts who enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Before heading outdoors and embarking on your first geocaching adventure with your Garmin Venture HC, you need to upload the waypoints for the caches you want to find.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download and install the Garmin Communicator Plugin from the Garmin website. This free plugin allows your handheld device to communicate with geocaching websites for the purpose of uploading cache waypoint data.

  2. 2

Upload cache data from websites such as Geocaching.com and OpenCaching.com. On both websites, you can search for hidden geocaches by location and upload the caches you want to find directly to your Venture HC. To upload the caches, you must first connect your GPS unit to your computer.

Once you click the GPS upload option next to your selected cache, the website confirms you have the Garmin Communicator Plugin on your computer and establishes a connection with your device. The site then saves the data to your Venture HC so you can access it at a later time.

  3. 3

Press and hold the "Find" button on your Garmin Venture HC.

  4. 4

Select "Geocache" to view a list of uploaded caches you still need to find. Use the directional keys to browse the list and select your next target location.

  5. 5

Highlight the cache you want to find and select "Go To" to assign the cache as your target location. Your Venture HC now enters Geocache Navigation mode and uses its GPS technology to guide you to the coordinates where the cache is hidden.

  6. 6

Refer to the comment section of your screen as necessary for hints and tips regarding the hidden cache. After you find it, it is marked as found in your device.
