When you are creating a volcano project, you may want to create a model of an erupting volcano out of paper mache. However, you can make the volcano look more realistic by making it out of Earth's materials, such as clay. This will make the model look more like a real volcano. You can find all of the materials you need in order to make an earthen volcano at any craft supply store.

Instructions

  1. 1

Tape a paper towel tube upright in the centre of an aluminium Swiss roll tray using masking tape.

  2. 2

Form two pounds of terra cotta clay around the paper tube to resemble a volcano. Do not cover the opening of the paper tube with clay. Allow the clay to air dry for 6 hours.

  3. 3

Paint the outside of the terra cotta clay volcano using acrylic paint. Paint the volcano using natural colours, such as green, brown or tan, or paint the volcano in a more artistic way using bright colours. Allow the paint to dry for 20 minutes.

  4. 4

Insert a funnel into the opening of the paper tube, and pour in one cup of baking soda.

  5. 5

Pour one cup of white vinegar into the tube through the funnel, then quickly remove the funnel to watch the volcano erupt.
