A boat equipped with an inboard motor may have more power and faster acceleration than an outboard-equipped vessel. The inboard may be noisier too. This is because most fibreglass boats do not have sound insulation installed in the engine compartment. It is an option you can add to your boat yourself with minimal expense.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Roll-on truck bedliner material
  • Paint tray
  • Paint roller

  1. 1

Raise the engine cover and inspect the engine compartment. Any place where you can see rough fibreglass is a place where sound insulation can be installed.

  2. 2

Open the can of roll-on truck bed liner and pour some into the paint tray. As long as the engine compartment isn't covered in grease and oil, no additional preparation is necessary for the roll-on liner to adhere to the inner hull.

  3. 3

Coat the roller with the bed liner just as you would if you were painting a wall. Coat the engine compartment with two coats of the insulation. Allow the first coat to dry for at least fifteen minutes prior to adding the second coat.

  4. 4

Apply the bed liner to the underside of the engine cover, also using two coats with fifteen minutes of dry time between coats. Allow the bed liner to cure completely before attempting to start the boat or closing the cover. The bed liner coating gives off flammable fumes during curing that could cause an explosion if ignited.

Tips and warnings

  • For additional sound proofing, apply two additional coats on top of the first two coats. Understand, however, that you will not be able to muffle all the engine noise.
