Knitted flowers are small, portable, easy-to-knit objects that don't take a lot of yarn or advanced knitting skills. Use this poppy as an embellishment on other knitted pieces, on accessories like hats and purses, or attach a pin to make it into a brooch.
Cast on 5 stitches using red yarn.
Knit to the end of the next row. This is a right side row, which will form the outside of the flower.
Increase 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row by knitting into the front and back of the first stitch. Knit all remaining stitches, stopping two stitches before the last stitch in the row. Increase by 1 in the next stitch by knitting into the front and back and knit the last stitch. You now have 7 stitches total. Repeat this step for 2 more rows, for a total of 11 stitches.
Knit all stitches for the next 3 rows. Do not increase.
Begin decreasing to form the top of your poppy petal. Slip stitch, slip stitch, knit by slipping two stitches purlwise from the left needle onto the right needle. Insert the tip of the left needle into the stitches you just slipped, and knit these stitches through the back loop. Knit to the last two stitches, and knit these two stitches together. You now have 9 stitches total.
Knit all stitches on the next 2 rows.
Repeat step 5. You now have 7 stitches on your needles.
Repeat steps 6 and 7 until you have only 3 stitches left on your needles. Bind off. You have now formed 1 petal. Repeat steps 1-8 three more times to finish making all four of your petals.
Form the centre of your poppy by using black yarn and casting on 14 stitches and immediately binding off.
Twist the centre of your poppy into a tight coil and sewing it in place with the black yarn. Take one petal and sew it into place, making sure it is slightly under the centre of the poppy to hide any seams. Continue sewing until all the petals are in place. Weave in any loose ends.
You can use any gauge yarn and any size knitting needles to make your flower. The bigger the needles, the bigger your finished poppy will be.
