Masks can be a creative way to add life to imaginary situations. Whether you are conducting a play, bringing a story or book to life, or simply pretending to be a character, a mask can enhance the realism for both the wearer and the audience. You can create simple masks from everyday materials. A billy goat mask is easily created from a paper plate and other household items.

  1. 1

Cut the ridge rim off of the paper plate using scissors. The rim should be cut off in one long piece.

  2. 2

Cut the rim section into two equal length pieces. Set aside for later use.

  3. 3

Create two holes for eyes on the inner portion of the plate.

  4. 4

Draw a goat nose and mouth on the plate under the eye holes. This can be done with crayons, markers or paint.

  5. 5

Stretch apart a couple of cotton balls to make longer strands of cotton.

  6. 6

Attach the cotton strands with glue to the bottom portion of the inner plate. This will create a billy goat beard to the chin of the mask.

  7. 7

Add horns to the top of the mask by stapling the two rim sections that were cut from the plate. Position the pieces so that they curl inward toward one another.

  8. 8

Punch a hole into each side of the mask using a hole puncher.

  9. 9

Tie an end of elastic cord to each hole so the mask can stay on the face without being held.

Tips and warnings

  • Paint the face potion of the plate before creating the face if you want the goat to be a different colour than white. The horns should remain white or off-white.
  • Do not let young children use scissors without adult supervision.
