How to Turn Off Shape Protection in Visio

Updated February 21, 2017

The Microsoft Visio software allows users to create diagrams through shapes and vector graphics. The program is often used by professionals to illustrate process flows. The shape protection feature of the application locks all shapes in place and prevents users from accidentally deleting, formatting or editing the shapes. Turn off the shape protection in Visio if you wish to edit a shape.

Click "Start," then "All Programs" and then "Microsoft Visio."

Click the "Microsoft Office" button and then "Open" from the drop-down menu. Select the file you wish to open and click the "Open" button.

Click "View" from the top menu and then click "Drawing Explorer Window."

Right-click the file name from the Drawing Explorer window and then click "Protect Document."

Uncheck the box next to "Shapes" from the Protect Document window.

Click "OK" to save your changes.
