On electric sewing machines, feed dogs are like small teeth that help the fabric manoeuvre smoothly under the presser foot and needle. You may experience circumstances that make it difficult for the feed dogs to operate, like using very thick fabric. Certain stitches can also be troublesome while the feed dogs are in motion, as with darning, where stitches are overlapped for added durability and strength. Many sewing machines, including those in the Kenmore line, feature adjustable feed dogs for use in these instances. Kenmore machines offer a one-touch lever system to conveniently raise and lower feed dogs.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Locate the feed dog lever. On Kenmore sewing machines with a free arm, the feed dog is on the back of the free arm bed. The free arm must be removed to access the feed dog lever. Refer to your owner's manual for the exact location of the feed dog lever.

  2. 2

Push the feed dog lever to the left to lower the feed dogs.

  3. 3

Push the feed dog lever to the right while turning the hand crank counterclockwise, or towards you, to raise the feed dogs.

Tips and warnings

  • Always remember to raise the feed dogs when you resume sewing normally.
