How to fill an area in illustrator

Updated April 17, 2017

Adobe Illustrator allows users to create and design images and other media projects using various tools and features within the program. Whether you are working on a custom Illustrator vector image or editing a photo, filling an area in Adobe Illustrator does not require extensive time or program skills and knowledge.

Open Adobe Illustrator and allow the software to load entirely.

Press "File" > "Open" and locate the file you would like to edit. Alternatively, select "File" > "New" to create a new Illustrator document.

Click the "Selection Tool" icon at the top of the left default toolbar or press "V" on your keyboard.

Select the object or area within your Illustrator file that you would like to fill with another colour.

Click the default "Fill" icon (generally white) located on the left toolbar under the magnifying glass icon. A palette window of colours will appear.

Click the colour you want to use to fill the area in your image and press "OK" to confirm the setting. Once you press "OK" the object will fill with the colour you selected.
