How to Untag Yourself in a Message on Facebook
Tags let your friends know you've mentioned them. (Dan Kitwood/Getty Images News/Getty Images)

Because your Facebook friends list includes people that you spend time with in the outside world, Facebook makes it possible to alert other users when you include them in a photo or post. Likewise, other users tag you if they check into a place while you're having dinner together or talk about you in a status update. In the interest of privacy, you may not always want the tags to exist---luckily, removing tags is very easy.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Locate the post on your news feed or your personal profile. Whenever you are tagged in a place check-in or other post, it will always show up on your personal profile feed.

  2. 2

Click the "Remove Tag" link immediately beneath the post.

  3. 3

Go to the "Privacy Settings" menu and click "Customize Settings" section if you want to stop friends from being able to tag you when they check into places. Click "Edit Settings" next to "Friends can check me into places" and then select "Disable."
