Most Native Americans, sometimes still called Indians, did not wear traditional hats. The hats the Native Americans wore on their heads were feathered headdresses. The headdresses had significance in each tribe. Most feathers represented bravery or courage in battle of some kind. The more feathers you had, the more powerful you were in the community. This is why the chief Native American of the tribe often had the most elaborate headdress. You can make your own Indian hat from craft foam and craft feathers. This project is ideal for the fall and celebrating Thanksgiving.

  1. 1

Cut a 2-inch thick strip from craft foam. Make the foam long enough to fit around the child's head and overlap about 1 inch.

  2. 2

Lay feathers on one side of the foam strip. Use whatever design you want for the feathers, such as all feathers of one colour or bigger feathers in the middle with smaller feathers on either side. Cover the entire strip in feathers.

  3. 3

Glue the feathers in place with hot glue. Allow the glue to dry for about 5 minutes.

  4. 4

Flip the hat over. Glue beads to the other side of the strip for decoration. Allow the glue to dry for 5 minutes.

  5. 5

Glue the two ends of the craft foam strip together to make a circle, making sure the beads face out and the bottoms of the feathers face in. Allow the glue to dry 5 minutes, then wear the hat on your head, or place it on a child's head.
