Some text messages you've sent and received are better deleted and forgotten. The iPhone stores all the text messages in the Messages app until you delete them. Removing texts from your device prevents others from seeing the messages if they are looking at your device and frees up the space occupied by the messages. You can permanently delete text messages on your iPhone from inside the Messages app.

Skill level:

Other People Are Reading

  1. 1

Tap the "Messages" icon on your iPhone.

  2. 2

Tap the name of the person who sent you the text message you want to permanently delete. A list of text messages you've sent to and received from the person that you have not previously deleted appears on the screen.

  3. 3

Tap "Edit" in the upper-right corner of the screen. Small circles appear to the left of each message.

  4. 4

Tap the circle to the left of the message you want to permanently delete until a red circle with a white check mark appears inside of the circle. Repeat this process for any other messages either to or from that person if you want to permanently delete them.

  5. 5

Tap "Delete" in the lower-left corner of the screen to permanently delete the messages you selected.
