If you do not want to work as a firefighter full-time, but would still like to get involved, working as a reserve firefighter may be an option to consider. If you are having a hard time getting on at a fire brigade full-time, getting a job as a reserve firefighter could be a way to get your foot in the door.

  1. 1

Get certified as an emergency medical technician or EMT. Many fire brigades are now making this a standard requirement for those wishing to become reserve firefighters. Enrol in an EMT class, which typically takes a few weeks to complete. Take an exam to become licensed as an EMT in your state.

  2. 2

Take classes at a university or a community college in your area. A fire technology class offered at many community colleges will give you the basics on what it takes to become a firefighter. While some fire brigades do not require a degree, an associate or bachelor's degree can improve your chances of being hired in the future.

  3. 3

Take and pass a firefighter test at one of your local fire brigades. Sign up to be notified of exams when they occur or simply check back with fire brigades frequently to make sure that you do not miss an opportunity. The exam will involve physical tests as well as a written portion.

  4. 4

Apply with a fire brigade after you have passed the exam. The fire brigade will then interview you for a job opening. If you are hired as a reserve firefighter, you will typically have to go through a training program administered by the department. This training program could take several weeks or months to complete. You will then have to take an exam that shows you understand what it takes to be a firefighter. At that point, you can begin working as a reserve firefighter.
