Fondant is a sweet frosting with almond paste and confectioner's sugar. Unlike royal icing, which must be spread or piped onto a cake, fondant can be moulded and rolled out. With a texture similar to play dough, you can even add textures to the top for an exceptional decorating style. The following are steps you can take to make alligator print fondant.

Skill level:

Things you need

  1. 1

Get a handful of fondant from your packaging and begin moulding it with your hands. You'll want it to be pliable, but not sticky.

  2. 2

Dust the counter top with some icing sugar and roll out the fondant. Do not flip the fondant over - rotate it 45 degrees every 10 passes or so. This will ensure that it does not stick. Always roll each pass from the middle so that the fondant spreads and thins evenly.

  3. 3

Place the alligator print texture mat onto the fondant, and gently roll the surface with the rolling pin.

  4. 4

Lift the fondant gently onto the cake and position it. Cut away any excess fondant from the bottom of the cake.
