The average compass is used to make small circles and arcs. (Jupiterimages/ Images)

A compass is an instrument used to draw circles. It is used in mathematics, drafting and other purposes. A compass is made from metal, plastic, or wood depending on the use of it. Circles are made by placing the pointed end of one leg of the compass into paper and placing a pencil in the other leg and moving it around the paper. This kind of compass is good for a small circle. However, if you need to make a bigger circle, you need a bigger compass. You can custom build a compass for a project that requires big circles.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  • 1-inch by 2-inches small piece of wood
  • 1-inch by 3-inch small piece of wood

  1. 1

Cut two 1-inch wide pieces of wood with a saw. The length of the two pieces of wood depends on the size of your circle. Use longer pieces for larger circles. The two pieces of wood are attached to make the compass.

  2. 2

Cut two pieces of wood, a 1-inch-by-2-inch and 1-inch-by-3-inch. The two pieces of wood are used as spacers between the two pieces of wood in Step 1.

  3. 3

Glue the 1-inch-by-2-inch piece of wood between the two pieces of wood (compass) in Step 1 at the front of the compass. Glue the 3-inch piece between the compass at the back. Put a clamp on the two pieces of wood and allow the compass to dry for about five minutes.

  4. 4

Mark the location for your pencil about one inch from the front edge of the two pieces of wood, and the hole for the screw about 1/2 inch from the same edge. The screw is in front of the pencil. Place a mark in the centre of the compass for the nail.

  5. 5

Place the marked areas on your drill press and drill holes.

  6. 6

Cut a groove down the centre of the front of the compass. The groove should be made in the small piece of wood between the long pieces and continue to the pencil hole.

  7. 7

Insert your nail in the centre hole to hold the compass in place, the screw in the hole 1/2 inch from the edge and the pencil in the other hole. You are now ready to draw a large circle.
