Instructions on Making Decorative Bra Straps
Decorating bra straps can revive an old or spruce up a boring bra. (Jupiterimages/Goodshoot/Getty Images)

Decorating bra straps is a great way to spruce up any bra or outfit. Bras these days no longer need to be fully covered by your outfits. Tank tops no longer require a strapless bra. Bra straps can be decorated with anything from beads to embroidery, to ribbon and crystals. This design is a whimsy combination of bows, crystals and ribbon intricately woven on the strap. For the best results, use a contrast double-faced satin ribbon, although any ribbon will work.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Crystals
  • 1/8-inch ribbon

  1. 1

Cut a four pieces of ribbon , each 12 inches long.

  2. 2

Tie each ribbon into a bow, with 1/2-inch loops and 3/4-inch tails. Cut the excess ribbon.

  3. 3

Use the needle and thread to tack one bow at each intersection of the strap and the bra in both the front and back. Tack the bow through the centre.

  4. 4

Cut four more pieces of ribbon, each 20 inches long.

  5. 5

Use the needle and thread to tack two of the ribbons on the underside of each of the front strap intersections of the bra. Tack them on top of each other.

  6. 6

Bring both ends of the ribbon to the right side of the strap and cris-cross them. Bring them back down to the underside of the bra straps and criss-cross them again. Continue to criss cross the ribbons down to the other end of the bra straps. Tack at the other end on the underside of the bra, edges together. Clip the excess ribbon.

  7. 7

Place a small dot of glue on one intersection of ribbon on the top of the bra strap. The dot should be no larger than the crystal that is going on it.

  8. 8

Place a crystal on the dot of glue.

  9. 9

Continue to place a dot of glue on every ribbon intersection on the top of the bra strap, and place a crystal on every dot of glue.

  10. 10

Repeat Steps 5-9 on the other strap.

Tips and warnings

  • You can use fabric paint instead of glue, if desired.
