Swiss rolls are small Swiss rolls of cake sold individually or in large packages. Swiss rolls are the ideal size and shape for turning into dinosaur appendages for a dinosaur cake. If you do not want to make the cake from scratch, simply purchase a sponge cake or other plain cake at the store. You can also make the body of the dinosaur using two round cake pans. Add the icing and embellishments to transform the cake pieces into a cartoon dinosaur.

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the round cake on a serving platter. Cut two of the Swiss rolls in half widthways diagonally to make four legs. Place the rolls near the bottom of the cake to make the legs for the dinosaur.

  2. 2

Stack two more Swiss rolls on top of each other and place this stack near the top of the cake to make the neck for the dinosaur. Cut one of the ends of the rolls diagonally, if necessary, so that it sits right next to the cake. Stack the other two Swiss rolls end to end near the middle of the cake to make the dinosaur's tail.

  3. 3

Remove any paper from the cupcakes. Cut of the top of both, so the tops are completely flat. Sandwich the two cakes together with icing. Place the sandwich at the top of the neck to make the dinosaur head. Trim the edges of the cupcakes to give the head an oval shape.

  4. 4

Cover the entire cake with buttercream icing. Use the icing to glue the legs and neck to the body and the head to the neck. You may have to insert a few toothpicks to help hold everything in place.

  5. 5

Roll out fondant in the colour of your choice to 1/8th-inch thick. Use enough fondant so that, when rolled out, it is about three inches larger than the cake plate. Pick up the fondant and drape it over the cake. Tuck the icing in around the cake and cut off the excess.

  6. 6

Pipe on details to decorate the dinosaur, such as a face, spikes, patterns or anything else you want to use on the cake.
