How to Restring a Stihl FS 55 RC Trimmer

The Stihl FS 55 R is a gas-powered yard trimmer. It lets you edge as well as cut overgrown weeds and grass with ease. The FS 55 R trimmer has a TapAction 2-line AutoCut head that is wound with two separate lines of string. When the head spins, the string moves fast enough to cut weeds and grass, as well as edge your lawn with ease. After regular usage, the string will break and the string supply will become exhausted, requiring you to wind more string onto the head of the trimmer.

Turn off the trimmer and place it on the ground with the head facing up.

Turn the bump-knob, located in the centre of the bottom of the head clockwise to loosen and then remove.

Lift the spool out of the head and remove any remaining string.

Cut two pieces of replacement string to approximately 20 feet in length.

Insert the first piece of string into the anchor on the bottom of the spool and then wrap the string around the spool in the direction of the arrows. On the last pass, run the string through the eyelet and out of the spool. Repeat for the top of the spool.

Trim the two pieces of string protruding through the eyelets to 12mm in length.

Place the spool back onto the driveshaft in the head.

Place the spring on top of the spool and then install the bump knob. To secure, turn the bump knob counterclockwise until tight.
