New vinyl emits an odour that many people find unpleasant. This odour can be more than a nuisance and can fill your home with toxic fumes. These fumes -- known as volatile organic compounds -- can cause headaches and nausea. Typically called offgassing, the odours from the new vinyl can take weeks to fully dissipate. You can take several steps to remove the new vinyl odours and prevent the fumes from taking over your home.

Move the vinyl outside on a warm, windy day. The fresh air with help remove the new vinyl odours. If you cannot move the vinyl outside, ventilate the room by opening the windows.

Launder vinyl shower curtains or vinyl tablecloths in your washing machine. Set the washer to gentle and let the drum begin to fill with the water. Add 60g (1/4 cup) of washing powder and 120g (1/2 cup) of baking soda. The baking soda will deodorise the vinyl. Submerge the vinyl in the water with a few bath towels. The bath towels will prevent the vinyl from sticking to itself. Let the washer finish a complete cycle before removing the vinyl and hanging it to dry.

Wash vinyl flooring with white vinegar to remove odours. White vinegar is a natural deodoriser that will help remove odours. Dampen a sponge mop in undiluted white vinegar and mop the floors as you normally would. Let the vinegar dry on the vinyl flooring.

Turn the heat up to 30 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) for 24 hours in the room where the vinyl item is located. After the allotted time, turn the heat off, open doors and windows and turn on fans to drastically drop the temperature. This process will accelerate the offgassing process and remove the odours more quickly.
