Creativity counts in houses or apartments with minimal space. Occupants must figure out how to make each room fit several purposes and how to utilise every available space. This is especially important when you have many items to store and wish to avoid paying for storage space. It is not always possible or cost effective to create a separate room for storage by building a permanent wall. Fortunately, a temporary partition can be just as effective. You can use items you already have, such as furniture and curtains, to divide a room effectively.

Pick the section of the room that you will use for a function other than storage. For instance, if you wish to use part of the room as an entertainment area, pick the area that contains the outlets and is closer to the door.
Determine how much space you will need for storage and how much space you will need for the other part of the room. Use this to determine a demarcation line for both sections.
Place a room divider along the demarcation line. Room dividers have three or four panels. If one room divider is not enough to block the storage area from view, then consider purchasing a second room divider.
Pick a bookshelf to use as a room divider. Ensure that the bookshelf is tall enough and wide enough to block most of the storage area from view. Place the bookshelf on the demarcation line. It could be in the middle of the line or against one wall to avoid blocking the path to the storage area. Arrange both sections of the room according to your needs.
Pick a sofa as a room divider instead of a bookshelf if you need additional sitting for the non-storage area. Place it on the demarcation line and ensure that there is enough space for a walkway on at least one side.
Hang a curtain from the ceiling if your wish to block the storage area completely. You can hang the curtain from a cable curtain rod system mounted on the ceiling. Measure the distance from the cable to the floor and the distance from wall to wall so you can purchase enough curtains of the appropriate size to fit the space. When you are ready to hang the curtains, attach the clips on the cable to the narrow edges of the curtains.
