How to repair an LED display

LED displays occur in many different applications, from the front of your DVD player to the display on your bedside clock. LEDs are light-emitting diodes that use very little power and give off very little heat. However, even these simple little electrical components can go bad or incur damage and need repair. The exact process will differ depending on the device housing the LED display, but the basic rules are the same.

Turn the device with the LED display on by plugging it in and pressing the power button. Note which parts of the LED display come on and which do not, or if the entire unit fails to turn on. Turn the device off and unplug it from the electrical socket. Place the item on a clear, dry work space.

Take the exterior housing off of the device to expose the LED display. If possible, snip off the individual broken LEDs from the display. Strip 1/4 inch from the connecting wires. Then install new LEDs by twisitng the wire leads to each free wire left over from the removal. Wrap the exposed metal wires with electrical tape. If the LED display is a singular unit, unscrew the display from the mount and disconnect any connecting wires. Slide in the replacement display and connect the power wire to it.

Reattach the housing on the unit and plug it back into an electrical socket. Turn the device on and trigger the LED display to check that it is working. If it does not work, there may be a problem with the circuits that supply the data or the power supply of the unit.
