Replacing Shock Absorbers on MG Midget

The MG Midget was derived from the Austin Healey Sprite, and was produced from 1961 to 1979. The Midget uses lever action shocks on all four wheels. These shocks work by transferring hydraulic fluid back-and-forth between two chambers. The front shocks act as an upper control arm and are linked to lower control arm by way of a kingpin. The rear shocks attached to the axle by way of a link rod. The DIY mechanic should be able to replace all for shocks in a few hours.

Park the Midget on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake. Place a jack under the lower control arm and raise the Midget until the wheel is off the ground.

Use a wrench, ratchet and socket to remove the pivot bolt where the shock absorber arm attaches to the kingpin. Remove the pivot bolt and raise the shock absorber arm away from the kingpin.

Use a ratchet and socket to remove the four bolts and washers that hold the shock to the crossmember. Remove the shock absorber.

Mount the shock absorber on the crossmember, install and tighten the bolts and washers. Slide the shock absorber arm over the kingpin. Install and tighten the bolt and nut. Lower the wheel to the ground.

Raise the rear of the Midget and support with jack stands.

Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolt from the shock absorber arm where it attaches to the link rod.

Use a ratchet socket to remove the bolts that hold the shock absorber onto the frame. Remove the shock.

Position the shock absorber on the frame, install and tighten the bolts. Line up the shock absorber arm with the link rod, install and tighten the bolt. Raise the Midget, remove the jack stands and lower the Midget to the ground.
