How to extend shower head arms

Updated November 21, 2016

Shower head arm extensions can be added to a standard shower head arm for added height. When you install a shower head arm extension, you won't have to bend your head down every time you wash your hair. Extension arms come in many different lengths, so you'll need to visit your local home improvement store to find the one that works best for your needs. An extension arm attaches to the existing shower head arm the same way a standard shower head attaches.

Cover the nut that holds the existing shower head to the existing shower arm with a dish rag. Grip the nut with a pair of pliers and untwist the nut until the shower head can be removed by hand.

Place the nut of the extension arm on the existing shower arm threads and tighten it with your fingers.

Cover the nut with the rag and tighten it with the pliers. Reattach the shower head to the threads at the end of the shower extension arm. Screw the nut onto the thread with your fingers and then use the rag and pliers to tighten it.

Measure the clearance from the tip of the existing shower arm to the ceiling of the shower with a tape measure. Do this before purchasing a shower arm extension so you know how much room you have to work with.
