The free online RPG RuneScape allows you to set up private servers on which you and your friends can play isolated games. If you're running a RuneScape Private Server (RSPS), you can add to the standard commands the players can perform in the game by writing new ones in Java.

Instructions

  1. 1

    Familiarise yourself with the Java methods you can use while composing RSPS commands. Read the "Some Basics in RSPS Coding" page linked in Resources--it contains detailed information on how to manipulate items, characters and NPCs.

  2. 2

    Open your server's "client.java" file. This will be in the Source folder where you've installed the private server. If your operating system is set to hide file extensions, it will appear simply as "client." Open the file with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad.

  3. 3

    Add a command by adding a chunk of code to the Java file. The code should probably be in the following format:

    if (command.startsWith("COMMANDNAME"))

            {

       do Stuff(x)

            }

    where COMMANDNAME is the actual text of the command, like "teleport," and "do Stuff(x)" is a reference to one of the methods you learnt about in Step 1, manipulating the game somehow.
