How to make a dalmatian costume for adults

Updated April 17, 2017

Dalmatian dogs are famous for their black or brown spots. They are so well-loved that some people wear Dalmatian costumes for Halloween or some other costume events to publicly display their affection for their favourite pet. Store-bought Dalmatian costumes usually consist of a large white body suit covered in spots and a headband or hat with ears attached. You can save some money by making your own costume with supplies you may already have such as white T-shirts, sweat pants and some extra fabric.

Pre-wash your white fabric, T-shirt and trousers to prevent any shrinkage later. The spots may warp the first time you wash the costume if the material isn't pre-washed.

Iron the fusible interfacing onto the back of the black fabric to make the fabric stiffer and prevent fraying once the spots are cut and sewn. Cut enough patches of black fabric in different shapes, then pin the patches all over the shirt and trousers. Sew around the patches with a whipstitch or a short-width zigzag stitch on a sewing machine to secure them to the fabric. Remove the pins.

Cover a headband with white cloth. Sew a tube the length and width of the headband of white fabric and sew one end closed. Turn it inside out and slide the headband into the tube. Turn the rough edges in and stitch it closed.

Cut four large triangles out of white fabric to make the Dalmatian ears. Pin them together in two sets with right sides together and sew two of the sides closed. Turn each one inside out. Pin and sew more spots to the ears and tack them to the headband about 6 inches apart with a whipstitch that goes all the way across the open edge of the ears. Make sure that your stitch catches the fabric for the open sides of the ears and the top of the headband.

Paint your face and neck white. Paint a black dot on your nose and a spot over one eye. Add a few extra spots randomly on your face and neck.

Add white gloves and white shoes to the Dalmatian costume for a complete package.

You can make a more feminine-looking Dalmatian costume by using a white dress. If you want comfort, use white pyjamas, or wear a white body suit for a sexier look. Wear a dog collar and leash as accessories. A dog tag can be customised at many pet stores to go with your costume.
