How to Convert GEDCOM to GEDCOM 5

GEDCOM stands for "Genealogical Data Communications." It is a file format that makes it possible for you to open genealogy files from a genealogy software program. GEDCOM 5.5 has the file extension .GED. Note that you will need a software program called "Master Genealogist" to convert GEDCOM to GEDCOM 5.5. You will require administrative rights to install "Master Genealogist" on your computer.

Instructions

    Purchase a copy of "Master Genealogist" if you do not have a copy yet (see Resources). You will need this software to execute the conversion process. You may download the 30-day free trial if you are looking for a short-term solution.

    Launch "Master Genealogist v7" from the Start menu under "All Programs."

    Click the "File" menu and select "Data Set."

    Choose "Export To" and select the option "GED-GEDCOM."

    Click the report form link. Verify the following default settings:

    Destination: "Gedcom 5.5"

    Character Set: "Ansel."

    If you see a different setting, change to the above default settings.

    Click "Save Destination" and choose the file name "*.ged."

    Click the "Focus" tab. Click "Filtered Group."

  8. 8

    Choose "Living Flag" under the "Field" category.

    Choose "Contains" in the "Operator" category.

    Type the letter "Y" in the "Value" category.

  11. 11

    Click "Generate" to end the task.
