  1. 1

Put your old feathered pillows into zippered pillow covers if you plan to donate them; usually the seams on an old pillow may be worn. If you have more than one pillow, don't wash more than two at a time. Wash on a gentle cycle with less soap than you would normally use. Dry on low in the drier or on the line outside.

  2. 2

Drop off the pillows at a recycling centre or donate them to charity shops such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army. You can also donate old feather pillows to animal shelters.

  3. 3

Compost the feathers. Cut the pillows open, gather the feathers and dump them on your compost pile. Make sure to cover them so they don't blow away.

  4. 4

Place a thin layer of feathers in a hole when planting. Feathers are a good source of nitrogen and work well for soft fruit such as raspberries and strawberries.

  5. 5

Use the feathers as a stuffing for other items, such as pet beds or cushions. They can also be utilised in various craft projects.
