Tarnish will make silver rings, bracelets and necklaces appear dull in appearance. Your fine jewellery will lose its lustre due to sulphur dioxide that is found in the air everywhere. Tarnishing also occurs due to direct and air exposure of chlorine and household chemicals. According to Blitz, "The rule of thumb is if you can smell chlorine, your silver is already in danger of discolouring." You can restore your silver bracelet to its original lustre appearance by utilising a few common household items.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Hob pan
  • Aluminium foil
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • Wash cloth

  1. 1

Choose a pan that is large enough to hold your bracelet and 2 to 4 cups of water.

  2. 2

Cut and place a sheet of aluminium foil large enough to fill the bottom of your hob pan.

  3. 3

Place your silver bracelet on top of the aluminium foil inside the pan.

  4. 4

Add 2 to 4 cups of water to the pan, enough to fully cover the bracelet.

  5. 5

Sprinkle 2 tbsp of salt and 1/2 cup of baking soda into the pan.

  6. 6

Place the pan on your hob and turn the stove burner knob to the highest setting to bring the water mixture to a boil. Allow the water to boil for eight minutes.

  7. 7

Turn off the stove and allow the water to cool for one hour.

  8. 8

Remove your bracelet from the water and gently dry it off with a soft wash cloth.

  9. 9

Repeat the steps if your bracelet still has some tarnish spots. Heavy tarnished silver items may need a few treatments.

Tips and warnings

  • Wrap your fine silver jewellery in tissue paper and store it in a jewellery box to avoid tarnishing.
