There are two different ways to deliver heavy parcels and packages to your friends or customers. One way is to transport the item yourself. However, this can be time-consuming and quite costly over long distances, so instead, send heavier parcels in the post by using the national postal service or by hiring an independent courier.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Measure the dimensions of your parcel. Do this by taking a tape measure or ruler and recording the height, width and length values for the item. You must measure your parcel because companies willing to send it need to know the size of the item before they can charge you. According to the United States Postal Service, any parcel that has a width, length or height of at least 12 inches is considered a large or heavy package -- independent couriers will still require every dimension of the parcel.

  2. 2

Weigh the parcel by using a set of home scales or by inquiring with your nearest post office. Weight is another value that needs to be provided before a price quote can be calculated for your delivery. Most postal offices will provide a set of scales for personal customer use -- simply place the item onto the scales and record the weight value from the display.

  3. 3

Send your heavy parcel by visiting the US Postal Service's price calculator website. Fill in the necessary fields (destination country, delivery Postcodes, mailing date), check the box that says "Large Package" and enter the weight of the parcel in pounds and ounces. Click on the "Continue" button to be taken to a new page.

Enter the physical dimensions of the parcel on the new page and click the "Continue" button again. Look at the various delivery options available -- especially the expected delivery date -- and choose a delivery option. Follow the online purchasing procedure and send your parcel.

  4. 4

Deliver the heavy parcel by a private courier service instead. Companies such as UK-based Parcel2Ship, US-based FedEx and UPS or the international Parcel2Go and TNT companies offer express delivery services to collect, transport and deliver your larger and heavier parcels. Simply enter the delivery details into the quote checker on the home page and press the "Quote" or "Continue" button. Follow the online instructions to purchase the service and send your heavy parcel to the delivery address.

Tips and warnings

  • Ensure that the package is securely wrapped and packaged. Make extra room in the parcel for cushioning and padding because this will keep your item safe. Seal the parcel with 2-inch tape, and avoid using string or cord because it will get caught in the mail processing equipment.
