How to open mdmp

Updated February 21, 2017

Minidump (MDMP) files are error logs created by Windows when a program encounters a critical error that requires it to shut down. These files are text documents that contain information about the system that generated the error, the time of the error, and the software packages and system files that were in use at the time of the error. This information can you discover what files or functions caused the error. If you have an MDMP file that was generated, you can open it as a text document.

Open the Start menu, click "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "Notepad."

Click "File," then "Open."

Click your MDMP file, then click "Open." The document will open in Notepad and be completely visible for your review.

You may wish to review your MDMP files if prompted by the Windows Error Reporting service to send them so you can view what information your computer is sending before trusting it to a third party.
