How to mould a beret

Updated February 21, 2017

Berets are not only popular in France, it is an accessory that can be worn with many outfits. Military-style berets have leather headbands that fit securely on the top of the head. To wear a beret perfectly, it needs to mould to your head. Wearing a beret is not difficult; having the correct size ensures the ideal fit.

Fill a bowl with hot water.

Hold the beret's inner lining and submerge the top of the beret in hot water. Do not get the leather headband wet; water can destroy the leather. Gently wring or shake out the excess water.

Put the beret on and mould it to your head.

Hold the beret's inner lining and submerge the top of the beret again in cold water. Mold the beret to your head again and keep it on for 20 minutes. While you have it on, you can mould it to your desired shape.

Repeat the entire process until you have the desired shape. If you choose to repeat the process, the beret has to be completely dry before you begin again.

Place the beret on your head so the headband is 2.5 cm (1 inch) above your eyebrows. Make sure the headband fits across your forehead.
