Two important considerations come into play before making a child's mobile --- the child's age and the child's interests. Construction is easy and your mobile can be made inexpensively, or with a few items that you may have around your house.

  1. 1

Select an embroidery hoop for your mobile. These are made out of plastic, wood or metal. However, the plastic ones come in vibrant colours that will add to the enjoyment of the mobile for your baby. The size of the hoop you select will depend on how large you want your mobile to be. So if you want many items hanging from the mobile, select a larger hoop.

  2. 2

Cut strands of ribbon or yarn using scissors. The length of the ribbon or yarn will depend on how far you want the items on the mobile to hang down. Tie ribbon or yarn around each stuffed animal. Make sure that you tie the ribbon or yarn tightly to secure the stuffed animals and leave enough of an end on the ribbon or yarn so that you can attach it to the embroidery hoop for hanging.

  3. 3

Tie the end of the ribbon or yarn to the embroidery hoop and let the stuffed animals hang down.

  4. 4

Tie four pieces of ribbon, or yarn to the embroidery hoop at each quarter of the circle, then knot them together above the hoop. Use these pieces of ribbon or yarn to hang the mobile from a hook in your ceiling.

  1. 1

Cross two pieces of dowel rod to make a T. The dowel rod should be about ¼ inch thick and both pieces should be as long as you want your mobile to be.

  2. 2

Wrap string in a circle 8 pattern several times around the middle of the two pieces of dowel rod, tying them together. Knot the string at the end to secure it.

  3. 3

Gather the items that you want to hang fro your mobile. You can cut shapes out of paper, use small toys, use stuffed animals, or anything that is of interest to your child.

  4. 4

Cut long sections of string with scissors. The length of the string will depend on how far you want your mobile pieces to hang down from the top of the mobile. Tie one end of the string to the mobile item you have selected and the other end of the string to one of the dowel rods. As you connect the items to the dowel rods, be sure and even them out so that your mobile hangs straight.

  5. 5

Cut four pieces of string with scissors and attach one piece of string to each end of the dowel rods. Then tie the four pieces of string together above the mobile. Use this bunch of string to hang from a ceiling hook.
