IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) interface drives have a 40-pin connector that is used to connect the IDE data cable from the motherboard to the hard drive. IDE hard drives also require a jumper setting to configure the drive to use one of the two connector positions available on an IDE cable. Set the jumpers on a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA 133 HDD according to the IDE cable connector position to which it will be mounted.

Hold the Maxtor DiamondMax drive so that the data connector is facing you and the power connector is to your right. Locate the jumper pins and jumper between the four pin power connector and the 40-pin data connector.
Grasp the two square plastic jumpers attached to the jumper pins and pull to remove the jumpers from the pins. Slide one jumper onto the two left most jumper pins so that the jumper is vertically oriented if the hard drive will be used as the computer operating system drive or will be the primary drive (first or "Master" drive) on an IDE cable inside the computer. If the drive will be positioned as a secondary or "Slave" drive, then do not set the jumper. If the computer uses a "Cable Select" cable then do not set the jumper and proceed to the next step.
Slide one jumper onto the two pins located to the immediate right of the left most jumper pins so that the jumper is positioned vertically on the jumper pins if the hard drive will be used in a computer that supports the "Cable Select" feature. If the drive is larger than 32 GBs and will be installed in a computer that cannot support a larger drive, do not set the jumper and proceed to the next step.
Complete the procedure above to configure the first jumper accordingly when installing the hard drive as a primary or "Master" drive, secondary or "Slave" drive, or in a computer that uses the "Cable Select" feature. Then slide the second jumper onto the vertical set of pins located two pins from the left most set of pins in the jumper pin area. The jumper should be oriented vertically when mounted on the pins.
