A Powerline adaptor allows you to turn a wall outlet from the main electrical supply in your home into an Internet connection or network point for your devices. This network does not require the loading of any software to work and can be connected to personal computers, gaming consoles, set top boxes and any other device that can connect to the Internet or your home network. If you've invested in a Powerline adaptor and are experiencing problems with it, follow the steps below to troubleshoot.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Two Ethernet cables
  • Router

  1. 1

Make sure that one of your Powerline devices is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not into an extension cord or power strip. It should not be plugged in near your router.

  2. 2

Check that your router is connected to the Internet and that it is working properly.

  3. 3

Ensure that one end of an Ethernet cable is plugged into an Ethernet "Out" port on your router and the other end is plugged into your Powerline adaptor. It is a good idea to test the Ethernet cable by first connecting from your router to a computer to make sure it is working.

  4. 4

Plug another Powerline adaptor into another power source near the unit that you want to connect to your network. Again, make sure that the adaptor is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not an extension cord or power strip.

  5. 5

Connect the other Ethernet cable from the second Powerline adaptor to the device that you want to connect. Again, it's a good idea to test the Ethernet cable if you are experiencing problems.

  6. 6

Make sure both power sources are on and that the LED on both Powerline adaptors is on.

  7. 7

Press the reset button to return the Powerline adaptors to their factory settings.

Tips and warnings

  • Some Powerline adaptors will have a password that you'll need to enter to gain access to your network. If this is the case with your adaptor, the password will be provided with the product documentation or printed on one of the adaptors. You will need to enter the password when prompted if you are using the adaptors for the first time.
