PC computers that utilise a small form factor chassis often require specially sized expansion cards for use in the PCI slots of their motherboard. The HP Compaq 6000 Pro is no exception to this generalisation, so using a smaller serial port expansion card in the PCI slot is required. Aside from being physically smaller, there are no other differences in the function of PCI expansion cards as they are used under your computer's Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system.

- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Low-profile PCI serial port expansion card
Disconnect all power supplies to your HP Compaq chassis and remove the battery. Put on your anti-static wriststrap before doing any work on the inside of your computer. Open the chassis by removing the retaining screws at the back edge of the right-hand side case panel. You can slide the panel toward the back of the chassis to unlock the retaining clips and lift the panel away from your computer.
Remove the small metal block-out plate in place of the PCI slot that you wish to use, allowing the serial port to show through the back of the chassis.
Insert the low-profile PCI serial port expansion card into the slot of the motherboard. Secure the card in place with the hinged retaining bar that holds the block-outs and expansion cards in place; simply lock it down over the flange of the expansion card's faceplate.
Replace the case side panel and secure into place using the screws.
Power up the PC and wait for it to ask for drivers. Some PCI serial port expansion cards use the built-in Windows drivers and will not require any additional drivers, so don't be surprised if you're not asked for them. However, if your system asks for the drivers then insert the CD that came with the serial port expansion card, and click the "Install anyway" button if the system asks about the authenticity of the driver software.
Reboot your HP Compaq 6000 if prompted to do so. The computer will automatically integrate the new serial ports into the system and you can now utilise them.
Tips and warnings
- Disconnect all power sources from the PC before opening the case. Always use an anti-static wriststrap to ground yourself so you don't cause damage to your PC with static electricity.
