How to Change the Battery in a Suzuki Intruder

Though the mechanical features of most Suzuki Intruder motorcycles are top of the line, many owners complain about the historically short lifespan and difficult accessibility of the Intruder's battery. That's according to Ken Freund's Haynes Suzuki Intruder Marauder Volusia Boulevard 1985-2006 Repair Manual, largely considered the top of the line in terms of do-it-yourself service manuals for cars and motorcycles. Changing the battery on your Intruder involves getting underneath the bike to access the awkwardly designed battery compartment. Because many owners believe the batteries of Intruders to not be of high quality, replacing the battery annually could be a helpful option.

  1. 1

Locate the battery compartment on the bottom of the bike in the centre. You might need to raise or jack up the rear wheel of your Intruder to access the battery compartment.

  2. 2

Unlatch and open the hinge cover holding the battery in place to provide easier access to the two screws holding the battery in place.

  3. 3

Unscrew the two bolts that hold the battery compartment in place. The bolts are on either side of the battery, so they will need to be accessed on opposite sides of the bike.

  4. 4

Catch the battery as it falls out of the battery compartment to gain access to the battery's terminals.

  5. 5

Detach the wires connecting the terminals by hand. Detach the negative (black) terminal wires before the positive (red) terminal wires.

  6. 6

Attach the terminal wires to the terminals of your new battery. Attach the positive wires before the negative wires.

  7. 7

Replace the battery into the compartment and screw it into place.

  8. 8

Latch the hinge cover holding the battery in place.

Tips and warnings

  • Wear gloves and goggles when working with your Intruder's electrical components.
  • Tape the negative terminal with black electrical tape as you detach the positive terminal wires to avoid accidentally shocking yourself.
