On a yearly basis, Garmin releases map updates for its GPS products. Before the maps can be used, they must be loaded onto the Nuvi 250. New maps can be transferred to the GPS with the Garmin Map Update application, which can be downloaded from your myGarmin account.

Sign in to your myGarmin account or create a new one. Download and install Garmin Map Update.
Connect the Nuvi to the computer via USB cable. Run Garmin Map Update. Follow the prompts to register your GPS. You'll need the product key.
Back up all the data on the device by clicking "Yes" and "Save music and pictures to my computer," if desired.
Click "Continue" to proceed with the installation, which may take several hours. Choose "Install to Device Only" if asked where you want to install the update.
Click "Continue" when you're notified that the update is complete.
Tips and warnings
