How to Reset the Expiration on an HP Ink Cartridge

Updated July 20, 2017

Hewlett Packard ink cartridges have a built-in microchip that tells the printer when they expire. Typically, HP cartridges are set to expire two years from their date of manufacture. When a cartridge is placed into your printer, the printer reads the date off this chip, and if it's expired, the printer will fail to recognise the cartridge, basically rendering it useless. Perform a workaround to reset the expiration date on your HP cartridges. One workaround procedure that works on all HP cartridges is the cycling technique.

Press the power button to turn on your printer, and remove all cartridges.

Press the power button again to turn your printer off. Then press the power button one more time to turn it back on.

Install the main cartridge you want to use, and wait for your printer to recognise it. When asked if you want to print an alignment page, select yes. After the alignment page is finished printing, remove the cartridge.

Install the second cartridge, and wait for your printer to recognise it. When asked if you want to print an alignment page, select yes. After the alignment page is finished printing, remove the cartridge.

Install the third cartridge, and wait for your printer to recognise it. When asked if you want to print an alignment page, select yes. After the alignment page is finished printing, remove the cartridge.

Install the first cartridge again, and wait for your printer to recognise it. When asked if you want to print an alignment page, select yes.

Perform the alignment according to instructions for your particular printer.

Tip

If your printer doesn't reset the cartridge after following these steps the first time, try unplugging your printer and going through the steps again.

Warning

Using old ink can damage your printer and void the manufacturer's warranty.
