GPT is an abbreviation for "GUID Partition Table." GPT provides a more flexible mechanism by which to partition a hard drive than older types of partitioning protocols. A partition is reserved space for data storage on a physical data storage disk (hard drive), which functions as if it were a separate physical disk. These partitions are visible to the system firmware that boots up the system, and then they are visible to the operating system when it is up and running. You can create a DPT partition only on a raw, or blank, disk.
Click on "Start" and then "Run." Type "diskpart" (without quotes) into the Run box. Then, press "Enter" on your keyboard. A box will pop up containing command prompt access.
Type "list" to list the hard drive volumes. At the next prompt, type "select x", with x being the number of the hard drive to be partitioned. (Do type the outside quotation marks in these or any of the other commands.) Type "new gpt."
Type "create name="efi system partition" type=efisys SIze=102." The name created here (in this case "efi system partition") can be anything, but if the name contains spaces, then it must have quotation marks around it. Otherwise, omit the quotes. (EFISYS is the partition required for the computer to boot.)
Type "create name="microsoft reserved" type=msres Size=31" to created the required MSR partition. (MRES is a Microsoft reserved partition for feature support that is used to convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk.)
Type "create name="basic data" type=msdata" to create a partition for the remaining partition space. (MSDATA is the user data partition that is used by Windows.) Next, type "inspect" to display the information about the newly created partition. Type "exit" to close the command prompt.
