Overclocking your ATI Radeon X1650 GT PCI-E means that you will be accelerating the default clock frequency recommended by the manufacture for a boost in performance. How far your ATI Radeon X1650 GT PCI-E can be pushed is determined by your computer's cooling hardware, such as additional fans and heat sink devices. Overclocking a video card can be a tricky process that takes many tries before acquiring optimum performance. The safest way to overclock an ATI video card is to use ATI Overdrive, which will help you get a performance boost while protecting it from overheating.

Instructions

  1. 1

Right click on a blank area of your desktop and select "Catalyst Control Center" from the menu. Click on the "Graphics" button, located on the top left corner of the Catalyst Control Center window and select "ATI Overdrive" from the menu.

  2. 2

Click on the padlock icon to access the overclocking features of ATI Overdrive. Click on the option box titled "Enable ATI Overdrive" to confirm you would like to customise the overclocking features.

  3. 3

Click the "Auto-Tune" button to overclock you ATI Radeon X1650 GT PCI-E to recommended settings based on your computer. Note that many users find that this feature can be very conservative. However, it's a good start if you're a beginner to overclocking.

  4. 4

Overclock your ATI Radeon X1650 GT PCI-E even further by moving the "High Performance GPU Clock Setting" and the "High Performance Memory Clock Setting" sliders a little bit to the right at a time, to slowly increase the card's performance. Click the "Test Custom Clocks" button to check if you have overclocked your video card too much or too little. If the test results are positive, move the sliders a little more until you find the optimum performance settings for your computer. If the test results in failure, move the sliders back slightly and repeat the test, until you find the optimum settings.

  5. 5

Click on the box "Enable Manual Fan Control" to increase the fan speed and cooling of the card. ATI cards are generally really good at adjusting the fan controls based on the card's performance, but an added boost might help you get a little more performance. Note that this customisation option only affects the fan built in on the ATI card and has no influence over any other fan in your computer.

Tips and warnings

  • If you can't find the proper overclocking balance and continuously fail the overclock test, click on the "Default" button to restore factory settings.
  • Overclocking is a trial-and-error process. Don't give up if you don't get optimum results immediately. Repeat the steps above as many times as necessary until you are satisfied with your custom performance boost.
