How to Disable the Ability to Change a Computer's Name
A computer's name identifies it over a network. (network cable image by Radoslav Lazarov from Fotolia.com)

The computer's name is the name that identifies it on the network. The name must be unique so that it doesn't conflict with any other computers that are on the network. In a business setting, computer names are important because information technology departments use them to identify specific workstations that need attention. In a home setting, you may want to stop children or other family members from changing computer names which may cause confusion. To prevent users from changing the computer's name, it is necessary to give them limited access to the system controls.
