The Cisco ASA has proven to be an excellent firewall choice for a mid-sized business. However, like most network appliances, the Cisco ASA 5505 does require update installations to protect against security issues, and also to fix any defects found in the IOS (Cisco operating system) after release. Upgrading a Cisco ASA 5505 IOS can be accomplished following a short procedure.

    Plug the Cisco serial console cable into the Windows XP computer 9 pin serial port and connect the other end of the cable into the console port on the Cisco ASA 5505.

    Select the "Start" button on the Windows XP computer, and then select "All Programs," "Accessories," and then the "Communications" program group. Click on the "HyperTerminal" icon and the HyperTerminal program will display.

    Enter "ASA 5505" in the "Name:" field presented, and then tap the "Enter" key. Select "Connect using:" and then click the "Com port" selection in the drop-down menu, choosing the port that is connected to the Cisco ASA 5505. Tap the "Enter" key.

    Select the "Bits per second:" option, and click the "9600" setting. Select the "Flow Control" drop-down box, click "None" and then touch the "Enter" key.

    Press the "Enter" key and the Cisco command prompt will display. If required, enter the console port password, and then press the "Enter" key.

    Enter the "Enable" command on the command prompt, and then press the "Enter" key. Type the Privileged Exec password when requested, and press the "Enter" key.

    Enter the "copy tftp disk 0:" command and then touch the "Enter" key.

    Type the IP address of the Windows XP computer to specify the network location of the TFTP service and the new IOS, and then touch the "Enter" key.

    Type the exact name of the IOS file, and then touch the "Enter" key. When requested, enter the name of the IOS file again to specify the destination file name, and then touch the "Enter" key. The command line output will provide status on the file transfer and provide notification when the file transfer is completed.

    Type "config term" on the command prompt, and then press the "Enter" key.

    Type "boot system disk 0:/ASA_filename," replacing the "ASA_filename" with the exact name of the IOS file that was just transferred to the Cisco ASA 5505, and then press the "Enter" key.

    Enter the command "Exit" at the command prompt and press the "Enter" key, and then type "write mem" and tap the "Enter" key, and then type "Reload" and press the "Enter" key to restart the Cisco ASA 5505 and boot into the updated IOS.
