Emoticons are great ways to liven up a text or an e-mail. By briefly representing the sender's facial expression, they help bridge the gap between the impersonality of written words and face-to-face communication. Emoticons can be created from combining punctuation marks and/or letters such as :] :( :p . Certain programs are capable of turning emoticons such as the previous examples into graphical "smiley" emoticons. This article highlights how to get graphical "smiley" emoticons on an iPhone.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Find and select the "app store" icon.

  2. 2

Search for "emoticons" and a list of dozens of applications will be populated. Some applications cost money while others are free.

  3. 3

Download the emoticon application you wish to use on your iPhone.

  4. 4

With some applications, as soon as you exit the "app store" you will be able to access the emoticons from a button on the QWERTY keyboard. Some applications require activating the emoticons prior to using them and there are usually instructions on the home screen of the application.

  5. 5

Try out your new emoticons with your QWERTY keypad by sending a text with the "messages" application or write something in the "notes" application.
