Gardeners often love to plant gardens that are as lovely as they are functional. To achieve this, some spend a lot of money on decorative containers and glazed pots for plants. If you don't have the budget for this kind of thing, turn ordinary terra cotta pots into a whimsical decoration with a pair of blue jeans. Not only does this save money and update your garden decor, it gives you another use for old jeans.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Stitch ripper
- Flower pot
- Mod podge glue
Wash and dry the jeans so they have a stiff, structured shape. Iron them a bit if the waistband or pockets look a bit wrinkly. The smoother your fabric in this case, the better.
Spread out the jeans on a flat, clean surface. Cut them apart in a straight, horizontal line just above the crotch. Set the legs aside for other projects; you want to use the waistband, zipper and pockets.
Flip the top of the jeans over and snip apart the seam between the back pockets with scissors or a stitch ripper. Work carefully to make your snips neat. Most pots won't use all of the fabric, but depending on the size of the jeans and your pot, you don't want to end up trying to hide carelessly hacked edges.
Wrap the jeans top around the pot, centring the fly in the front of the pot and lining up the top edge of the waistband with the top edge of the pot. You will have too much fabric on the bottom; that's OK.
Overlap the fabric in the back of the pot to see where the left cut edge hits the right side of the jeans. Cut away the excess fabric on the right side of the jeans, leaving about ½ inch extra fabric. On most pots, this means you'll have one back pocket on the back side of your pot.
Take the fabric off the pot. Paint the pot with a thick even layer of mod podge.
Press the waistband to the pot first, then smooth the rest of the fabric tightly over the pot. Snip 1 inch wide fringes into the bottom of denim where it sticks out from the pot. Fold these fringes under the pot and mod podge them into place.
Paint the denim on the outside with a thin even coat of mod podge. Let the pot dry overnight. You should have a whimsical pot with a zipper and button fly, two hip pockets and a single back pocket. Plant as usual.
Tips and warnings
- Stick dried flowers or gardening gloves into the pockets of the jeans for an additional touch of whimsy, or tuck things such as fertiliser tablets and watering schedules into them.
- Use child's jeans for very small pots. If you plan correctly, make an entire family of different sized pots, one for each member of your family.
