Customising your own virtual car is almost as exciting as going to a dealership to pick out your new ride. To make the process simple, most car manufacturers have added a build-your-own feature on their websites that allows potential clients to virtually customise the car of their dreams. Perhaps you're an outdoor enthusiast who needs a four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with a bike rack and all-terrain tires. Maybe you're looking for a luxury sports car with heated leather seats and a state-of-the-art speaker system. Whatever your desire, customising your own virtual car is a breeze.

  1. 1

Decide the brand of car you want to customise. Review car manufacturer websites like,,, or to find what suits you best. Pick out a specific vehicle model and browse around the manufacturer website for the "Build Your Own" option. This section should be relatively easy to find because most manufacturers make this option available on their home page. Try selecting your specific vehicle model. Searching for the "Build Your Own" option if you have difficulty finding it on the site's home page. Also note that variations, such as "Build and Price" or simply "Build," are used also.

  2. 2

Select a vehicle package. Packages range from basic to luxury and change in price dependent upon add-in features, such as all-wheel drive, navigation systems, Bluetooth capabilities and interior seat coverings (i.e. cloth versus leather). Basic packages might feature cloth seats, roll-up windows, and manual door locks. Luxury packages might feature heated leather seats, a panoramic moon roof and a touch-screen navigation system. Choose the package that best suits your needs or desires. Keep family, common travel destinations and current gas prices in mind when making your selections.

  3. 3

Start customising your virtual vehicle. Most manufacturer websites will begin with the exterior design of your car. Choose a paint colour, tire specifications and rim specifications. Add chrome accents and tinted windows for a luxurious look. Add a luggage rack if you travel often, a rear spoiler if you want a sporty look or a moon roof if you enjoy gazing up at the night sky. Continue to the interior design of your virtual vehicle. Choose seat coverings, accent colours and carpet colours. Add speciality speakers, a navigation system or ambient lighting. Consider adding DVD players in the back seat if you have young passengers.

Tips and warnings

  • The last step on most car manufacturer's websites is the vehicle summary. It will include all of your set specifications along with pricing. The summary will also include purchasing options, dealership locations and a payment estimator.
  • Not all features are offered with every vehicle make or model.
