WiNRAR is an archive program used to compress files into archive formats such as RAR, and also for opening these files. Files compressed into RAR format are smaller than they would be in their original format. These files can also be password protected--you'll need the password before you can open the file. If you misplace the password, you can use "cracking" software to help you unlock the file. Cracking software refers to program that try to gain access to a file by discovering the password. If there is no password protection, you can open the file with WinRAR.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Double-click the RAR file--if it doesn't have a password, the program will open for you and show you the RAR files inside.

  2. 2

Download and install Advanced Archive Password Recovery (see Resources). This program is free to try out, though the trial version only unlocks 4 characters of your archive password. The full version costs £31 as of 2010.

  3. 3

Try RAR Password Recovery Magic (see Resources). The program gives you full functionality for the first 10 uses for free. It employs strategies such as the "brute force attack" which goes through every letter combination to find your password. The full version costs £19.40 as of 2010.
